Comprehensive Analysis of Agricultural Goods Flow in Kansas

In a study commissioned by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, DIS conducted a comprehensive analysis of the flow of agricultural goods into, out of, and within the state of Kansas.

The movement of the following commodities was analyzed using DIS’s dynamic flow model:

Corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat, dried distillers grains, soybean meal, wheat mill feeds (midds), meat and bone meal, ethanol, biodiesel, beef and dairy cows, fed cattle, hogs, sheep and goats, broiler chickens, turkeys, and milk.

The Challenge

The biggest challenge in completing this project was to comprehensively understand all aspects of supply chains for studied commodities from points of production to first-level processing. Our team was required to accurately understand and analyze the extensive and complex flow of nearly twenty agricultural commodities within and through Kansas and beyond.

The study provided valuable insights into the logistics of Kansas agriculture, revealing that a significant portion of commodities is used locally, while substantial volumes are imported and exported. These findings help in optimizing supply chain efficiencies and supporting not only the state’s agricultural economy in particular, but the Kansas economy at large.
